[Maintenance] New Platform Migration & Other Notes

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

We know, we know. Jonathan said in our last blog post that we’d be ready to release everything by this week and it turns out that this week is over in a few hours. Unfortunately, we do not have everything ready and will be forced to delay this. We have been told to expect our coded design by Wednesday, so that should definitely be up at the latest by Friday of this coming week. Our new service targeted at web designers/developers is likely to be released separately from our design after we work out some kinks in our implementations. However more importantly, we have decided to push toward deploying a new virtualized platform for our shared hosting product line. This concept has been discussed numerous times and planned for next year, but we think right now is a perfect time to implement this new virtualized and dynamically scalable shared platform. Our new website will more accurately discuss what this new platform means and how it benefits you.

Thus for several reasons, we need to migrate all current customers to this new virtualized platform ASAP. We have an automated migration planned for exactly Wednesday, October 8th at 11:59PM PST. You do not need to do anything in terms of your account as this will be an entirely seamless migration. One point of concern though is for customers running forum communities. We highly recommend that you put your forum on “maintenance mode” a few minutes after 11:59PM with a message explaining that you’re undergoing a server migration. This way, visitors with the new DNS will see your forum while visitors on the old DNS will see the maintenance message.

We understand the significant inconvenience this may cause for you especially after we just recently did a server migration that involved much of the same processes. When the migration is completed, we will apply 1 month of free hosting to each and every one of our customers’ accounts. Hopefully, this makes this migration more tolerable.

Again, we offer our apologies for such a short notice for a significant migration, but we promise you that it’ll be well worth it. Get ready to shake up the shared hosting industry. Traditional shared hosting will be left behind.

Server Infrastructure Upgrade

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

This is a major scheduled maintenance, so please be sure that you understand exactly what this involves.

On Sunday, August 3rd at 11:59PM PDT, we will be migrating all hosting accounts on theta.vectorlevel.com to a new server in the same facility for a new RAID array setup. Unfortunately, as this will be a new machine, the IP addresses will change along with the server name. We will be transferring over all VectorLevel related files (website, client area, blog, etc.) over to the new server as well the DNS server for ns1.vectorlevel.com earlier on Sunday to make sure DNS propagation goes as smoothly as possible when we move all customer accounts later that night. You don’t need to do anything except possibly make backups, but we’ll be doing multiple checks to ensure that all of your data is transferred successfully before taking the old server offline. If your websites are powered by databases that are constantly updated (such as forums), we recommend that you put your scripts in maintenance mode for a few hours to ensure that the data on the new server is as recent as possible. We will be sending out an email notification 1 hour before the maintenance is scheduled to begin.

We are setting aside roughly 1 hour of “downtime” for this migration, although we anticipate there to be little to no downtime as our DNS settings will be modified to make the propagation period from the old server to the new server as quickly as possible. This means that you likely will not even notice the effects of this migration, which should be as seamless as possible. We will keep all customers updated as this migration is underway.

If you have any questions about this maintenance, please submit a support ticket or comment here.

We appreciate your business and thank you for your patience.

Client Area SSL/DNS Issues

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

We are encountering some issues with our SSL configuration and DNS settings for our client area. In the meantime, please send all support requests to support@vectorlevel.com.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will keep posting updates here.

Kernel Upgrade

Monday, July 28th, 2008

On Wednesday July 30th at 11:59PM PDT, we will be loading a custom 2.6.26 kernel on theta.vectorlevel.com. We anticipate no more than 5 minutes of downtime at the most.

Thank you for your understanding.

ns2.vectorlevel.com

Monday, June 30th, 2008

We have successfully migrated ns2.vectorlevel.com (our secondary nameserver) to a separate network and datacenter in California for DNS redundancy. As a note, our hosting servers are located in Dallas, Texas. There was no downtime.

The new IP address for ns2 is 67.222.8.45.
