Server Infrastructure Upgrade

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

This is a major scheduled maintenance, so please be sure that you understand exactly what this involves.

On Sunday, August 3rd at 11:59PM PDT, we will be migrating all hosting accounts on theta.vectorlevel.com to a new server in the same facility for a new RAID array setup. Unfortunately, as this will be a new machine, the IP addresses will change along with the server name. We will be transferring over all VectorLevel related files (website, client area, blog, etc.) over to the new server as well the DNS server for ns1.vectorlevel.com earlier on Sunday to make sure DNS propagation goes as smoothly as possible when we move all customer accounts later that night. You don’t need to do anything except possibly make backups, but we’ll be doing multiple checks to ensure that all of your data is transferred successfully before taking the old server offline. If your websites are powered by databases that are constantly updated (such as forums), we recommend that you put your scripts in maintenance mode for a few hours to ensure that the data on the new server is as recent as possible. We will be sending out an email notification 1 hour before the maintenance is scheduled to begin.

We are setting aside roughly 1 hour of “downtime” for this migration, although we anticipate there to be little to no downtime as our DNS settings will be modified to make the propagation period from the old server to the new server as quickly as possible. This means that you likely will not even notice the effects of this migration, which should be as seamless as possible. We will keep all customers updated as this migration is underway.

If you have any questions about this maintenance, please submit a support ticket or comment here.

We appreciate your business and thank you for your patience.

Monday, July 28th, 2008

On Wednesday July 30th at 11:59PM PDT, we will be loading a custom 2.6.26 kernel on theta.vectorlevel.com. We anticipate no more than 5 minutes of downtime at the most.

Thank you for your understanding.

New Services Division: Eureka and Shift

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

We’re proud to announce the creation of our new services division through the release of Eureka and Shift. This new set of services is not designed to replace our main offering - application hosting - but to complement it and provide our customers with a greater array of services as well as expand our influence in the hosting industry.

Let me summarize our first two major services starting with Eureka. Eureka is essentially the custom solutions service for VectorLevel - it offers infinite scalability for your project(s) ranging from virtual private servers to powerful dedicated servers to load-balanced clusters and more. We’re very excited about this offering as it allows us to provide our customers with numerous upgrade paths whenever needed. Read more about Eureka.

Shift is our new server management service that’s not directly related to our hosting offerings, but allows us to expand our range of services in the hosting industry. Our talented technicans are ready to perform one-time jobs, 24/7 management support, proactive monitoring, and more. Read more about Shift.

We hope this new division will benefit VectorLevel by expanding our range of services in the hopes of eventually becoming your first choice for anything web hosting related. If you have any questions about these new services, please send an email to sales@vectorlevel.com or leave a comment.
